THE experts in the UK is currently developing a kind of purple tomato that is claimed to have avail inhibit cancer cell growth. Tomatoes are a new type of hybrids of these genes contain many experts believed the antioxidant pigments called anthocyanins, which are crucial to block tumor and cancer.
As reported in the journal, Nature Biotechnology, scientists from John Innes Centre, Norwich, succeeded in creating a new type of tomato variants with combinations of genes from the snapdragon flower or Antirrhinum magi.
Snapdragon flower is known as one of the anthocyanin-rich plant, a substance also found in various types of dark-colored berries such as blackberry, cranberry and chokeberry.
In his latest research, genetically modified tomatoes have been tested in mice in the laboratory. The result, groups of mice with cancer who are given purple tomatoes to survive significantly longer than the mice on a standard diet, either fed or given without regular tomatoes.
"The effect was greater than we expected," said lead researcher Cathie Martin, who also plant biologists.
